Robotics
The Robotics program begins at the very early grades of the Southern Berkshire Regional School District. Students begin their exploration of our Robotics systems in grade four when they build and program a robot to take a trip across the solar system, visiting several planets along the way. Teachers use this approach to integrate Science, Technology, Math and Engineering (STEM) in their curriculum. Students lay out a model of the solar system on their classroom floor and begin the journey of their "space" robot, from earth to the outer rings of Saturn!
The next opportunity for their involvement in Robotics begins at grade five where students can join an afternoon Robotics club. During this club phase, students have the opportunity to design, build, test, and then compete with their Robot in a region-wide Robotics competition called First Lego League. This competitive Robotics program is offered to students in grades five through seven.
Students in the High School have two opportunities to be involved with Robotics. We offer an after-school competitive opportunity called the First Tech Challenge where students build a competitive Robot using a different, and more complex, platform than they used in earlier grades. Students in grades nine through twelve may also take a formal Robotics class where they can invent Robotics that roam our halls or climb our walls!
