The Aerospace Engineering class recently finished the build phase of a 24-volt electric vehicle. The EV is part of the class’s lunar rover project. Students are studying the engineering of the orignal lunar rover as well as the new rovers proposed for the Artemis moon mission in 2026. The EV runs on two rechargeable 12-volt deep cycle batteries running in series with a 1 HP electric motor. The class is now entering the testing phase to assess the mechanical and electrical performance of the vehicle.
On May 21st, the class will be racing their EV in Berlin, CT. The alternative energy race challenges high schools to run their EV for one hour, completing as many laps of the track as possible in that time. During that hour, students must change drivers every 15 minutes, but they can only pit for mechanical repairs. They are not allowed to charge or change their batteries at any time.
At Mount Everett, a unique program allows students to gain hands-on teaching experience with younger classmates. Ninth grader Kylie captivated the attention of kindergartners in Ms. Sophie's class during a reading station as part of the Early Childhood Education course.
Mount Everett Science students took a mini-expedition to our campus Vernal Pool this week to search for signs of Spring. They observed and documented the timing of the changes in three species of trees and the deposition and development of amphibian eggs (Wood Frog and Spotted Salamander).
On Wednesday, student-athletes from grades K-5 participated in the Special Olympics at Monument Mountain Regional High School. We held our banner high as we marched in the opening ceremonies representing SBRSD. Athletes of all ages took part in the fun and games. Representing schools and programs from all around Berkshire County, teams gave their all in each event, while the crowd cheered them on. Our athletes participated in three events, the softball throw, the long jump, and everyone's favorites, the 50-meter dash. One of our fifth graders ran the 100-meter dash and earned a gold medal. Together, our athletes earned 15 medals, 5 gold, 5 silver, and 5 bronze. We made new friends, hugged each other, and left with huge smiles on our faces. If you have not made it to this event, put it in your calendar for next year. Always the first Wednesday in May, it's the best day of the year!

On Friday the College Experience Class (juniors and seniors) and the entire 10th grade attended the Future Fair at Simon's Rock! There were speaking events, booths, games, and food. The 10th grade also looked over the 2025 Mount Everett Program of Studies and started the process of signing up for classes.
Over the past month, NMC’s Pre-K through 2nd grade classes participated in a two-day residency with Aaron and Rachel from MAPS (Music-Art-Puppets-Sound). All of the classes worked collaboratively on an interactive art project that is now hanging from a shared bulletin board. The students learned about seeds and what they need to grow, how they are pollinated, and the different parts of plants. Each class used a variety of mediums to create a display that the students could play with, and use to act out roots growing out of seeds, flowers blooming, and vines spreading.
During the time with MAPS, the students danced, painted, created prints, made their own music, and even used flour as a glue to make large seeds. They also weeded and planted seeds in the garden bed near the school. The goal is to use the marigolds and other plants that were planted next fall when MAPS returns for an 8-week residency with all students in the NMC school.
Mrs. Sue's Pre-K class celebrated Earth Day with a fizzy science experiment!
The children used eyedroppers to squirt colorful vinegar onto baking soda in round pans. It was green and blue vinegar, just like the Earth's land and oceans! They watched and listened with excitement as the mixture fizzed and bubbled, turning the white baking soda into a blue and green landscape.
Once the fizzing stopped, it was time to explore! The children carefully touched the creation, feeling how cool and soft it was. They shared what it reminded them of, with answers like sand and playdough. This activity was a fun way to celebrate Earth Day, and it also connected with what they're learning about their five senses!
South Egremont School students are studying: 'Growing and Changing.' Children have started Narcissus bulbs and planted black bean seeds. Every day they look closely to find evidence of growth and change and sketch what they see.

Ms. VonRuden's Science students analyzed frog and fishfly larvae under a microscope before break. By closely observing these creatures, the students can gain a deeper understanding of their anatomy and adaptations.
Mount Everett's beloved tradition, Greek Week, was another resounding success for the 7th grade! Throughout the week, students immersed themselves in the rich tapestry of Greek culture, from its ancient myths to its vibrant contemporary scene. The week culminated in a festive morning where learning turned into friendly competition. A hearty congratulations to Athens, this year's champion!
LEAP students at UME learned all about solar eclipses!
We started by watching a video to understand how the moon blocks the sun during an eclipse. Then, we sang a fun song to remember the concept. Next, we got creative! We made the sun on black paper, then crafted a moon and attached it to a stick. By moving the moon, we simulated an eclipse and saw how some sunlight still peeked through.

Mount Everett students participated in a Spring pep rally with our guests from Hong Kong yesterday.
On Tuesday Mt Everett students participated in the annual 413 Youth Conference at Tanglewood Institute. The conference brings young people from across Berkshire County together to explore, learn, and discuss topics of interest. Students attended workshops focused on self-awareness and care, relationship building, goal setting, sustainability, creative problem-solving, and innovation. On a scale of 1 to 10, students’ ratings ranged from 8 to 20.
